Agkistro is the northernmost village in the prefecture of Serres. It is located next to the bordeline with neighboring Bulgaria. The village has a long history. The Turkish stone hamam, dates back to the Byzantine period (950 A.D.), as well as the tower built in the village center, which functioned as a clock during the 14th century.

 Agkistro’s hot springs are among the best in Europe.They have a temperature of 40.5 ° C and the waters are ideal for rheumatism, arthropathies, discopathies, myalgia, etc. You can enjoy the wellness and rejuvenation of the Agkistro’s steam bath.

Alistratis cave is located six (6) km southeast of the homonymous community, in the gorge of the Aggitis River. The area is 14,000 acres. It is considered to be one of the most beautiful and largest caves in Greece, possibly also in Europe, where nature has shown the greatest power of creating decorations and shapes.
As the visitor walks inside the cave the decoration becomes richer in whitewashed stalactites. From the reception to the right starts a second gallery, almost parallel to what we saw. At one point the two galleries are joined together and continue wider and higher, while huge stalactites as 15 m long hangs from the ceiling.

At a distance of 100 kilometers northeast of Thessaloniki, near the Strymonas bridge, where its an emblematic lion, are the ruins of ancient Amphipolis. It was a great city that prospered in ancient times, founded in 437 BC. from the Athenians to the location of the former city of Idonida.
It was a colony of strategic importance, as the location was chosen to control the Mines of Pangea. In 422 BC it breakaway from Athens and in 357 BC. was conquered by the King of the Macedonians, Philip II. With the relocate of the capital to Constantinople, a new significand period of prosperity for Amphipolis was started. The reason for this was the crossing of Apostle Paul in 50 AD. In the 6th century AD monumental temples are built in the city on the acropolis, in the place of the old sanctuaries. From the end of the 7th century the decline of Amphipolis begins , with the citizens leaving the city to settle in the ancient city of Hiona, now Chrysoupolis.
The many years of excavations brought to light many and remarkable finds. Today the visitor can see and admire, exemplary exhibits, coins and inscriptions, as well as rare finds of the entire historical route of the ancient city.
An important upgrowth in the history of Amphipolis is the excavation of Kasta Hill. In 1964, a quadrilateral building was discovered, based on scattered architectural parts, it was found that the Lion of Amphipolis was once at the top of the tumulus.

 
Just 40 km from the city of Serres and 100 from the city of Thessaloniki the Lake of Kerkini is located. The region has been declared a National Park and, according to the Ramsar’s international convention, is one of the ten wetland habitats of international importance in Greece. Kerkini was created in 1932, when a dam was built in the Lithotopos area to contain the Strymon River. In 1982, a new dam was built.
Today Lake Kerkini is a huge environmental project that has given life to a multitude of birds and mammals. In the area there are dozens of guesthouses and hotels with the most modern comforts (fireplace, hot tub, indoor and outdoor swimming pools) as well as traditional taverns with local dishes.

At the Vrontou mountain, at a 1600-1850metres of altimeter, lies the ski resort of Lailia. It is a small ski center that attracts the citizens of Serres but also visitors.
It is only 27 kilometers from the city of Serres and 105 kilometers from Thessaloniki. It was founded in 1978 by the Mountaineering Association of Serres, and every year are organized Pan-Hellenic downhill races, endurance races and other ski races.
The Lailias ski center has a main track of 1000 meters and a width of 60 meters, served by a 850-meter towed lift, capable of carrying a total of 700 people. For beginners there is also a smaller 200 meter long lift. At the base of the ski center there are ski rentals, a food canteen, an information desk and a First Aid Station. In the wider area they are have been created by private individuals hotels, restaurants and traditional taverns, entertainment centers, as well as sports and entertainment businesses, ready to welcome even the most demanding customer.
To the north of the prefecture of Serres, 7 kilometers from the town of Sidirokastro, there are the local thermal springs , with a complex that includes excellent facilities, providing high level hospitality to the visitors. The healing properties of the spas are many: they help in bone and joints diseases, rheumatoid arthritis, spondyloarthritis, osteoarthritis, deforming arthritis, myalgia, tendinitis, sciatica, back pain, cervical syndrome, urological and gynecological diseases.

The Monastery of Timios Prodromos is built in a deep ravine of Menokiou Mountain, about 12 kilometers from the city of Serres. Due to its long tradition, it is one of the most important and historical monastic centers of Macedonia.
The Monastery was founded in 1270, when the monk Ioannikios of Serres with his orphaned nephew Joachim, settled in the area, renovating the ruined chapel that existed there and organize the first monastic community. Ioannikios, when he died in 1300, was buried in the courtyard of the monastery. He was succeeded by his nephew Joachim, who renovate and expanded the monastery. The monastery proceed to be a a great spiritual center and acquired a great fortune. During the 19th century, a Greek and Primary School functioned there. In 1913, as well as during the two world wars, he suffered serious disasters and looting, especially his valuable archive and rich library.
Of particular interest are the frescoes that adorn the katholikon and the chapels. These are iconographic ensembles dating back to the 14th to 19th centuries, reflecting the painting trends that prevailed in the wider region. The wood-carved temple is from the year 1803. Around the katholikon there are the monks’ cells, the dining room and the buildings of the priestly school, which with their outer walls form a precinct with a tall tower in one corner.
Since 1986 the women’s brotherhood from the Holy Monastery of Panagia Odigitria Portaria, Pilion, was installed in the ruined Monastery, under the guidance of the elder Ephraim, from the Holy Monastery of Mount Filotheos on Mount Athos. In 2010 the Monastery was damaged by a fire that caused great damage in many places. However, thanks to the daily superhuman effort of the monks and the sensitiveness of pilgrims and friends of the Monastery, the building complex tends to regain its first glory and honor.

The founding of the Byzantine Acropolis dates back to the 9th century AD, where sources mention that Emperor Nikiforos Phocas built fortifications in the city of Serres. During the Byzantine period it is referred to as “Castle”. The view from there is magnificent because you can see the whole city and much of the plain of Serres.
